Abstract
What kind of rhetorical strategies do the biggest companies in Norway use on net when they communicate their corporate social responsibility (CSR)? This question is answered through theory about CSR, rhetoric and the net. The question is further elucidated methodically through qualitative content analysis of the corporate web pages and qualitative interviews with representatives from five of the biggest companies in Norway; StatoilHydro, Telenor, Orkla, Aker Solutions and Total E & P Norway.
The content analysis and the interviews show that all the five biggest companies express their social responsibility. I have chosen to use this as the main assertion of the corporations, and found three claims the companies use to support this assertion: Claim 1: We improve the world. Claim 2: We keep our house in order. Claim 3: Others approve of us. In light of these claims, I have analyzed how the companies use the three ethos strategies of Aristotle and Anthony Ewing’s four ethos strategies. I have also found other ethos strategies that the companies use, like certification, verification and ranking.
McMillan suggests that ethos can rehabilitate companies social responsibility, through the creation of mutual dwelling places which means that the companies opens for dialog with their stakeholders. I suggest the net as a place where they can form this dialog. It’s apparent that few of the companies make use of the opportunities which the net offers for making interactions with their stakeholders. The conclusion is that the web pages are still characterized by monological communication, and to a greater extent concerned with image building than relationship building.
