Abstract
The thesis is a regional archaeological study of the Neolithic period (ca. 3900-1700 BC) in the Agder-region of South Norway. Through analyses of settlements, stray finds and pollen diagrams, human use of the landscape and resource utilization, social structures and practices are discussed, as well as cultural historical issues and contact between societes in Agder and other areas.
Through a theoretical framework of sociological theory of practice, the thesis contains an attempt to describe social institutions in the Neolithic communities along the coast of Agder, and to understand the social processes and characteristics of the historical circumstances that resulted in both the stability of these institutions from Late Mesolithic times until the Middle Neolithic B, and the rapid transformation of society during the transition to the Late Neolithic, ca. 2350 BC. These transformations are discussed in connection with the establishment of the Bell-Beaker Culture in the area.
