Abstract
Social media has become an integral part of election campaigns the last years. Facebook is an appropriate platform to share photos and messages that contain both political and non-political content. This master thesis studies, through a qualitative content analysis, how eight Norwegian party leaders are portrayed in their five most popular Facebook posts with photos during the campaign of 2013. Furthermore, it examines the extent to which these presentations are influence by personalization - that is, whether the party leaders are transparent on a personal level. This thesis draws on theoretical perspectives from different research fields, with an emphasize on research within social media, visual communication, rhetoric and political communication. The analysis illustrates how party leaders portray themselves as either the humorist , the warm , the hero or the dutiful on the Facebook photos. In addition, the analysis demonstrates that there are in some cases large differences between the party leaders. The reason for this might be that the party affiliation could have an effect on what type of person the party leader portrays. There are also differences among party leaders in terms of the degree of personalization, however, no one reveals much of his or hers private life.
