Abstract
This master thesis examines how Airbnb, as a leading sharing economic platform, uses content marketing on Instagram and how this kind of marketing creates engagement. It also looks at how photographic means, storytelling and linguistic means affect engagement. The sample is all the 655 pictures Airbnb put out on Instagram from January 1st through December 31st, 2017. Using content analysis and a complementary rhetorical analysis, the following research question is answered: How does Airbnb use content marketing on Instagram and how does it create engagement? To answer this research question, I have discussed the findings against theory and previous research from marketing, content marketing, social media marketing and rhetoric. The research shows that Airbnb transfers the premises of sharing economy to their content marketing and that the concept of sharing is also part of their content strategy. Most of the photos they have shared are photographed by users of Airbnb's services, while Airbnb themselves contextualize the images with their own captions. In addition, research shows that the story Airbnb chooses to tell through the photos they share and the texts they write, is not necessarily creating the most engagement.
