Abstract
Abstract This study addresses a selection of eight news articles from different genres and themes that was published and widely shared through social media in 2015. The purpose of the study is to examine common factors among the selected articles and why they are especially suited for sharing, given the current function and workings of social media. Using qualitative text analysis this study aims to uncover written and visual characteristics in the articles that could help to explain why they were shared. The findings suggest that all the selected articles are written within a popular journalistic discourse and that they essentially build upon identification as a news criterion. In light of the current function of social media, we seem to share articles that are positive, arouse strong emotions, provides social capital and that we identify with. This shows that there is a clear connection between how the texts are produced and why they are suited for sharing, given the current function and workings of social media.
